UFC Fight Night 271 comes to Climate Pledge Arena in Seattle on Saturday, March 28. The five-round main event sees former two-time middleweight champion Israel Adesanya (24-5) face Joe Pyfer (15-3). The fight could be a turning point for both men.
Main event: Adesanya vs. Pyfer
Israel Adesanya is 36 and has lost three straight since regaining the title in April 2023. He dropped fights to Sean Strickland, Dricus Du Plessis (submission), and Nassourdine Imavov (second-round TKO). Those losses have left him 0-3 since the title win and under serious pressure to win.
Joe Pyfer is seven years younger and on a three-fight win streak. Thirteen of his 15 career wins have come by stoppage. After his only UFC loss to Jack Hermansson in February 2024, Pyfer knocked out Marc-Andre Barriault, beat Kelvin Gastelum by decision (with two knockdowns), and submitted Abusupiyan Magomedov in round two.
Adesanya still has a physical edge. He is 6’4″ with an 80-inch reach, about five to six inches longer than Pyfer (6’2″). If Adesanya can use his jab, teep kicks and distance, he can keep a shorter pressure fighter away. Pyfer needs to close distance, cut off the cage, and force Adesanya into fights. Pyfer has shown power, but he can tire in championship rounds. Betting has been volatile; Adesanya opened as an underdog before settling as a slight favorite.
Other key fights on the card
In a featured bout, Grasso (16-5-1) meets Barber (15-2). Grasso won their first fight clearly at UFC 258. Since then Grasso won the flyweight title and lost it, going 0-2-1 in her last three with a draw versus Valentina Shevchenko and losses to Shevchenko and Natalia Silva. Barber has seven straight wins since their 2021 meeting and enters as a favorite. A win for either woman could lead to a title shot at 125 pounds.
Michael Chiesa faces Niko Price in what is expected to be Chiesa’s retirement fight. Seattle is Chiesa’s home turf and a full-circle moment for him. Price stepped in after Carlston Harris withdrew with visa issues.
Other fights to watch: Julian Erosa vs. newcomer Lerryan Douglas at featherweight, Mansur Abdul-Malik vs. Yousri Belgaroui at middleweight, and Terrance McKinney vs. Kyle Nelson at lightweight. The prelims include Chase Hooper vs. Lance Gibson Jr., Marcin Tybura vs. Tyrell Fortune, Ricky Simon vs. Adrian Yanez, Casey O’Neill vs. Gabriella Fernandes, and the card opens with Bruna Brasil vs. Alexia Thainara.
