Brock Lesnar says he had to force his way into the UFC. The former WWE star and NCAA champion told how he climbed into the Octagon area at UFC 74 to meet Dana White and win a chance to fight in the promotion.
How Lesnar forced his way in
After leaving WWE and a short time with the Minnesota Vikings, Lesnar says the UFC ignored him. He said Dana White would not return his calls even though Lesnar had just fought for K-1 at the L.A. Coliseum and wanted to join the top MMA promotion.
Lesnar says he bought four nosebleed tickets to UFC 74 at the MGM. When Randy Couture beat Gabriel Gonzaga for the Heavyweight Championship, Lesnar climbed past security, ran to the Octagon and pulled Dana White aside to introduce himself.
First UFC fight and its result
Dana White agreed to give Lesnar a one-fight deal to prove himself. That fight was against Frank Mir. Lesnar lost by kneebar submission. He said Mir “almost broke my leg in half.”
Even after the loss, White saw Lesnar’s drawing power. The UFC negotiated a longer deal and Lesnar began a high-profile MMA career. Lesnar finished his MMA run with a 5-3 record and one no-contest.
Why he had to prove himself
Lesnar believes Dana White was right to be cautious. “I had no credibility,” Lesnar said. He pointed out he was known as an amateur wrestler and an entertainer, not a proven MMA fighter. His early pro fight history included a quick win over a lesser opponent, but that did not prove he belonged at the top level.
Lesnar later beat Randy Couture to win the UFC Heavyweight Championship. He admitted Couture was near the end of his career when Lesnar dethroned him, and said promoters were eager for a new champion at the time.
Money, legacy and what matters most
Lesnar said he made a lot of money in the UFC. He did not go into detail on pay numbers but called the deal “quite well” for him financially.
When asked which title meant more, his NCAA National Wrestling Championship or the UFC Heavyweight Championship, Lesnar picked college wrestling. He said the NCAA title was his proudest achievement because he chased that goal for 17 years and finally reached it as a young athlete.
