Colby Covington has filed a civil lawsuit against Jorge Masvidal over a 2022 incident in Miami. The suit asks for money damages and says Covington was hurt in the attack.
Background: UFC 272 and the fight
The two fighters met at UFC 272 in March 2022. Colby Covington won that fight by unanimous decision. After the bout, Jorge Masvidal publicly said, “If I see him out in the streets, I’m going to give him everything I got to break his f**king jaw.”
The 2022 Miami attack and criminal case
Less than three weeks after UFC 272, the two men crossed paths outside Papi Steak in Miami. According to the civil filing, Masvidal approached Covington and struck him without warning, starting a physical fight.
The incident led to criminal charges. In November 2023, Masvidal pleaded guilty. He was given credit for time already served and ordered to pay legal costs. He avoided additional jail time under the terms of the plea.
Civil lawsuit: claims and damages
Covington filed the civil case last month in Miami-Dade County. The suit seeks more than $50,000 and court records say the total requested could exceed $100,000. His lawyers say the attack was deliberate and caused physical injury and other losses.
The complaint lists specific claims: medical expenses, ongoing effects from injuries, and property damage. Covington says a Rolex watch was damaged and values it at about $15,000. The suit asks for compensation for medical bills, lost income, pain and suffering, and other damages allowed by law.
Covington has asked for a jury trial. No court date has been set yet, so the civil case will move forward through the courts before any trial happens.
What happens next
The dispute between the former teammates from American Top Team will now play out in civil court. The criminal matter has concluded, but the civil claim remains active. If the case goes to trial, a jury will decide the money Covington may receive.
