Jon Jones says he is done with fighting and is focused on business. His recent comments add clarity to a rocky period that has reshaped the UFC heavyweight picture.
Jones: ‘My gloves are hung up’
In a short social media video shared by Red Corner MMA, Jones said he no longer sees himself as a fighter. “My gloves are hung up,” he said. “I’m chilling these days. You got business Jon Jones, no more fighter Jon Jones.”
Timeline of the recent saga
The last two years have been a back-and-forth for Jones and the heavyweight title. He was scheduled to defend the UFC heavyweight belt against Stipe Miocic at UFC 295 but tore his pectoral muscle and could not fight. Tom Aspinall won the interim heavyweight title at UFC 295.
When Jones and Miocic finally met a year later, Jones beat Miocic at UFC 309.
At the UFC Baku post-fight press conference in June 2025, UFC President Dana White announced Jones was formally retired and promoted Aspinall from interim to undisputed heavyweight champion. That promotion ended long-running talks about a title unification fight between Jones and Aspinall.
Shortly after the retirement announcement, Jones showed interest in returning for a planned White House event now called UFC Freedom 250. He re-entered the UFC testing pool about two weeks after White confirmed his retirement. At one point White said Jones vs. Aspinall was his “dream main event,” but White also said he did not trust Jones to headline the White House card because of off-octagon issues.
UFC Freedom 250 and the title picture
The UFC Freedom 250 card will not feature Jones. Instead, the card will have an interim heavyweight title fight between Ciryl Gane and Alex Pereira. The main event will be Ilia Topuria vs. Justin Gaethje to unify the UFC lightweight championship.
Tom Aspinall has been unavailable since suffering an eye injury in the UFC 321 main event against Ciryl Gane. That injury factored into the heavyweight title plans and the move to an interim title fight for Freedom 250.
