A new documentary about Shawn Michaels will stream on Peacock on April 13, just before WrestleMania 42 in Las Vegas.
What the film covers
The film is called The Heartbreak Kid: Becoming Shawn Michaels. It looks at Michaels’ rise in wrestling, his hard times, and his comeback before he retired from in-ring competition in 2010. The documentary is directed by Matt Braine. Paul “Triple H” Levesque is listed as an executive producer along with Lee Fitting and Ben Houser.
Fall, recovery and return
The film tells how Michaels struggled in the 1990s. He had problems with bad backstage behavior and battled drug and alcohol abuse. A serious back injury at the 1998 Royal Rumble led to a four-year break from wrestling. During that time he changed his life.
When he returned to the ring in 2002, he came back as a born-again Christian. He went on to have more big matches and later moved away from full-time wrestling. The documentary traces that path from trouble to recovery and shows how he rebuilt his career and life.
Voices in the film and current work
The documentary includes interviews from many people who knew him in the ring. Those interviewed include Paul “Triple H” Levesque, Kevin Nash, The Undertaker, and Bret Hart. The film also features former and current stars from the developmental brand, including Je’Von Evans, Trick Williams, Joe Hendry, Sol Ruca, and Ethan Page.
Michaels’ daughter appears in the trailer and speaks about her father. The film also shows his current role running the NXT brand at the WWE Performance Center in Orlando, Florida. It gives an inside look at how he helps new wrestlers and shares his experience with the next generation.
Why fans should watch
The Heartbreak Kid: Becoming Shawn Michaels focuses on both his in-ring skill and his personal life. It aims to show the full story: the performances fans know, the mistakes he made, and the way he found a second chance. Fans interested in wrestling history and redemption stories will likely find it compelling.
The documentary will stream on Peacock on April 13, timed to arrive ahead of WrestleMania 42 in Las Vegas. It offers a close look at one of wrestling’s most famous performers and the work he does now to shape future stars.
