Roman Reigns retained the WWE Universal Championship in a Triple Threat main event against Edge and Daniel Bryan at WrestleMania 37. The match closed the two-night show at Raymond James Stadium in Tampa Bay, Florida, on the weekend of April 10–11, 2021.
Background
Edge returned to WWE after a nine-year medical retirement and won the 2021 Royal Rumble to earn a WrestleMania main event. Daniel Bryan was also chasing Roman Reigns after having Reigns in the Yes Lock at Fastlane, though the referee did not see the submission. Edge later helped Reigns retain at Fastlane, which set up a tense three-way feud.
Bryan went to SmackDown general manager Adam Pearce and won a final chance at Reigns. That led to the Triple Threat match being booked for WrestleMania 37, the first time fans saw Reigns’ “Tribal Chief” character live at a major stadium event after the Thunderdome era.
The Match
The bout opened fast and physical. With no disqualifications in a Triple Threat, all three men fought hard from the start. Bodies spilled outside the ring and the ringside area was torn up. Jey Uso appeared on the floor and delivered superkicks to opponents who went outside, adding heat to the show.
In the ring, Daniel Bryan played a strong, driven role. He balanced crowd support with ruthless offense. Edge was the clear fan favorite and provided many near-falls and big moments. Roman Reigns acted as the dominant heel, bullying both opponents, hitting a powerbomb through an announce table, and selling attacks in a convincing way.
Late in the match the action got chaotic. Edge used a piece of steel and put Reigns in a Crossface for a tense moment. Reigns looked in real trouble after taking a spear on the floor. Interference and ringside brawling led to a dramatic finish.
Result and Aftermath
In the closing moments, Edge gave Bryan a Con-chair-to. Reigns then delivered the same move to Edge, stacked both opponents, and scored the pin to retain the Universal Championship. Jey Uso’s interference helped shape the ending and gave Reigns a decisive win.
The match ran just over 20 minutes and moved quickly. It was a show-stopping main event that helped cement Reigns’ “Tribal Chief” persona in front of a live, vocal crowd after a long period without fans in arenas.
Why It Matters
This was an important moment for Roman Reigns’ career. The Tribal Chief character had been developed largely during empty-arena shows. WrestleMania 37 was the first time that character faced a big live crowd, and Reigns turned the boos into power. After this match, fans and critics began to accept Reigns’ new direction and his role as the top star of the company.
