Sami Zayn was once one of WWE’s most beloved stars. Now his character feels stuck and repetitive. Fans see him as a sad, unsure man instead of the exciting underdog he used to be.
From NXT favorite to top storylines
Sami Zayn rose to fame in NXT. Fans loved his energy, his moves in the ring, and his entrance music. He had a long, memorable feud with Kevin Owens. In the early 2020s he turned into a conspiracy theorist character that many found entertaining.
Zayn’s work with The Bloodline was another high point. His role with Roman Reigns and that storyline gave WWE one of its best long-term stories in years. The moment when Zayn turned on Roman Reigns at the Royal Rumble was a major, emotional point in that run.
Current gimmick is wearing thin
Recently Zayn has been shown as someone who can’t win the big prize. He lost his WWE Championship shot to Drew McIntyre at the Royal Rumble in Riyadh. That match looked like a chance for a major career moment. Instead, the current TV version of Zayn spends weeks in backstage segments acting sad, frustrated, or jealous of other stars like Cody Rhodes.
For about two months, the show has returned to the same scenes: Zayn in a plain white T-shirt, complaining and doubting himself. This repeated use of the same mood makes the character feel weak. Fans who once cheered him now see a whining figure. A little doubt and failure can make a story better. But the same sad scenes every week make the character stale.
New stars and a clear path forward
Newer stars like Trick Williams, Oba Femi, and Bron Breakker are rising fast. Trick Williams cost Sami his match against Aleister Black on the March 20 SmackDown. That interference points to a possible match between Zayn and Trick at WrestleMania 42. Right now, Trick looks like the crowd favorite, and it is hard to imagine a large arena cheering for a downbeat Zayn over him.
There are two clear paths forward. One, Zayn finds himself again, rediscovers confidence, and wins a major title. He once ran entertaining shows with weekly U.S. title open challenges, and he can be that guy again. Two, he turns heel. A switch to a more selfish, arrogant Zayn could fit the story beats already in place and would refresh his character.
What fans can expect next
If WWE keeps Zayn as the sad, unsure babyface, his role may keep shrinking while newer stars take spotlight. A double turn at WrestleMania, or a clear heel turn after advice from a veteran like Randy Orton, would give him a new direction. Either change would help make Sami Zayn interesting again.
