Joe Rogan sharply criticized the Michael ‘Venom’ Page vs Sam Patterson fight at UFC Fight Night 270 in London, calling the bout “crazy bad” and questioning the matchmaking that put the two former training partners together.
Rogan Blames the Matchmaking
Rogan spoke during his live Fight Companion podcast at the event. He praised both fighters but said the matchmakers made a mistake by pairing Page and Patterson.
“It’s interesting that they didn’t think of this when they booked this fight,” Rogan said. “They didn’t think, ‘These guys are training partners, this might be a stinker.’ Maybe it’s like, you can’t get anybody to fight Venom Page in London? That might be a problem, too.”
Rogan also said Patterson’s familiarity with Page’s style gave him a clear advantage. He suggested fighters might avoid Page because Page’s style can make opponents look bad. Rogan quoted the idea that Patterson may have felt confident because he had spent a lot of time training with Page.
Rogan: One of the Least Active Fights
As a long-time UFC color commentator, Rogan has seen many fights. He ranked this bout among the least active he has watched, comparing it to the Derrick Lewis vs Francis Ngannou fight for lack of action.
“This might be the least action of any fight, ever, next to Derrick Lewis and Francis Ngannou,” Rogan said. “This is crazy bad. That’s a crazy matchup. It’s literally the last guy you want to fight a style like that, someone who understands it. Don’t you want excitement?”
Fight Result and Page’s Response
Michael ‘Venom’ Page won the fight at UFC Fight Night 270. After the bout, Page posted on Instagram to address fans and critics. He said he got the win but did not deliver the performance he wants.
“Got the win. Not the performance I aim to give, and I know people expect more. I expect more from myself too,” Page wrote. He added that sometimes styles clash and a fight becomes tactical rather than explosive, but he does not want to be in boring fights.
Page thanked the UFC for the opportunity, respected his opponent, and told fans he will get back to work and prepare for the next fight.
