Colby Covington says he was surprised and frustrated when he was left off the UFC card announced for the White House this June. He spoke about the reaction from Eric Trump and Donald Trump Jr., and he also looked ahead to his next fight at RAF 07 against Dillon Danis.
White House snub and backstory
Covington is a known supporter of President Donald Trump. He took his interim welterweight title to the Oval Office in 2018 and has been open about his political views since then.
This June, UFC president Dana White announced a South Lawn event called UFC Freedom 250. Covington was not included on the card. The omission surprised him at first and led to some heated comments in the media.
Talks with Eric Trump and Donald Trump Jr.
Covington said he has spoken a lot with Eric Trump and Donald Trump Jr. after the announcement. He said they offered to help him with the situation.
“I’ve talked to them extensively about it,” Covington said. “They’re like, ‘We’d love to help and if you want us to go to our dad we could.’ But they’ve got so much bigger things to focus on.”
He added that Eric Trump is busy running the family business and that Don Jr. has many commitments. Covington also said Don Jr. might have political plans of his own in the future.
Covington’s reaction and message
After his initial anger, Covington says he cooled down and thought about the bigger picture. He admitted he said some things in the media that he probably should not have said.
“I’m not going to be an egotistical moron and go ‘Me, me, me.’ It’s about us,” he said. He reflected that he had already achieved a lot by visiting the White House with his title belt in 2018.
Covington also referenced wider issues he believes will occupy the President, noting a focus on the war with Iran. He used that to explain why the White House and the President might have other priorities than changing the UFC card.
Next fight: RAF 07 vs. Dillon Danis
Covington will next compete at Real American Freestyle Wrestling’s RAF 07. He is scheduled to face Dillon Danis. The promotion and matchup were confirmed by Covington, who is shifting his focus back to competition.
He has said he is ready to move on from the White House issue and concentrate on training and the upcoming match. Fans will be watching to see how he performs against Danis at RAF 07.
