Former WWE star Raj Dhesi, known to fans as Jinder Mahal, says his 2024 departure from WWE felt like the right time. He talked openly about the reasons for leaving and what comes next for his career.
Why He Left WWE
Dhesi said his release in 2024 was not a shock. He believes a mix of new management and the changing nature of pro wrestling led to his exit. “It was time to go, bro,” he said. “It’s a young man’s game. Management changes. Some guys benefit, some guys don’t. I just wasn’t being used.”
He also said a major moment with a top star was a sign for him. He called his segment with The Rock a dream moment and said it made him realize his time in WWE was nearing an end. “When you’re a performer, it’s a different type of pressure. You can’t view it as a fan,” he added.

Health and In-Ring Future
Dhesi said injuries have taken a toll on his body. He revealed he has advanced arthritis in a knee and will soon have another surgery. This will be his fifth surgery on that knee alone.
Because of the wear and tear, he is winding down his full-time in-ring work. He still trains and does rehab to stay in shape, but he is cutting back on the more demanding parts of his career. He said the decision to reduce his schedule comes from both his body and the way he was being used in WWE.
What He Is Doing Now
Since his release, Dhesi has worked on the independent wrestling scene. He has also taken steps to control his image outside WWE. Late last year he filed a trademark for the name “The Maharaja,” which suggests he plans to keep performing in some form.
While he is stepping back from the heavy travel and weekly schedule of major promotions, he has not announced a full retirement. He said he wants to manage his body and pick projects that make sense for him now.
Legacy and Next Steps
Dhesi is a former WWE Champion and remains a known figure in pro wrestling. He spoke calmly about the change in his career path and showed respect for the business and fans. For now, he is focused on recovery, selective bookings, and protecting his name for future work.
Fans can expect to see him on indies and possibly in special appearances, while he heals and plans what comes next outside the weekly WWE grind.
