Daniel Bryan’s big night at WrestleMania 30 did not bring him the simple joy most people expect from a career peak. He won the WWE World Heavyweight Championship, but the event and the days after left him with pain and heartbreak.
WrestleMania 30 matches and results
WrestleMania 30 took place on April 6. Daniel Bryan wrestled twice that night. First he defeated Triple H to earn a spot in the main event. Later, Bryan won the WWE World Heavyweight Championship by beating Randy Orton and Batista in a triple-threat match.
That same card featured another huge and shocking match. Brock Lesnar defeated The Undertaker, ending The Undertaker’s long undefeated WrestleMania streak. That loss dominated the conversation after the show and cast a shadow over the rest of the night.
Physical pain behind the scenes
Daniel Bryan has said he was in serious pain going into WrestleMania 30. He suffered a stinger in his arm that left him unable to move it during one match. He also had a concussion that he hid from others. He recalled a time weeks earlier when he could not stand in the shower and had to be driven to the next town by a friend to keep working.
These injuries made the night harder for him. In an interview with UFCcoverage, Bryan said he did not always think fondly about his WrestleMania win because of the physical toll and the stress around it.
Personal loss and other tragedies
The night had bright moments too. An 8-year-old fan known as Connor the Crusher met Bryan and later received special recognition through a charity called Connor’s Cure. But the joy was short-lived. Connor died the Wednesday after WrestleMania. A few days later, on Easter Sunday, Bryan’s father, Donald, died suddenly at age 57.
Bryan and Brie Bella were married five days after WrestleMania, but Bryan says WWE would not allow Brie to come down to the ring during the show. All these events—his injuries, the deaths of Connor and his father, and the other shocking events on the card—made the moment hard to enjoy fully.
