Nate Diaz says his brother Nick’s long suspension after a marijuana positive was decided by the athletic commission, not the UFC. Nate spoke about the situation during an interview with Theo Von.
What Nate Diaz said
When asked whether he tried to get Nick back into the UFC, Nate said he did not try. He told Theo Von he felt he was not in a position to help and compared it to not being able to get someone out of jail.
Nate also clarified who made the suspension decision. He said the UFC was not responsible and that the decision was made by the commission: “It wasn’t the UFC at all. I think it was the commission.”

Nick Diaz’s UFC and earlier career highlights
Nick Diaz is one of the sport’s best-known fighters. He won titles in WEC and Strikeforce at welterweight before moving to the UFC.
During his second run in the UFC, Diaz beat BJ Penn in October 2011. He later fought Carlos Condit as a stand-in and lost that fight for the Interim Welterweight title. After that loss, Diaz tested positive for marijuana and served a one-year suspension before getting a shot at Georges St-Pierre for the Welterweight title, which he lost.
Suspensions, overturned result, and return
Nick Diaz later fought Anderson Silva at middleweight under a three-fight deal. Diaz lost that bout, but Silva tested positive for steroids. The result was overturned to a no-contest and Silva received a one-year suspension.
Separately, Diaz tested positive for marijuana again. The Nevada State Athletic Commission handed him a five-year suspension.
Nick Diaz returned to the UFC in 2021 to face Robbie Lawler. He lost that fight and then retired. His final career record stands at 26-10 with 2 no-contests.
