Charles Oliveira answered Nate Diaz’s recent callout but says his main goal is to win back the UFC lightweight title. The veteran Brazilian is weighing his options while staying focused on training.
Diaz callout and Oliveira’s reply
Nate Diaz told Theo Von in a recent interview that he would “beat the fucking shit out of Charles Oliveira.” You can watch Diaz’s comments here:
Oliveira heard the callout and said a fight with Diaz would be big and would sell well. He told Canal Encarada that he and his team are thinking carefully about the next steps. Oliveira noted that Diaz draws attention and would make money for a fight, but Oliveira remains focused on the title.
Targeting the lightweight belt and UFC Freedom 250
Oliveira said he wants to become champion again. He has fought 37 times in the UFC and is planning his path back to the top of the 155-pound division.
The belt picture could change at UFC Freedom 250 on June 14. That event will feature a lightweight title fight between Ilia Topuria and Justin Gaethje. Oliveira said he is open to serving as a backup for that fight, but he set clear conditions.
Oliveira wants a guarantee that if Topuria wins, he will stay at lightweight and defend the belt rather than move to welterweight. His concern is that if the new champion leaves the division, the belt could become vacant and the UFC might ask Oliveira to fight for it on short notice in July or August. Oliveira said he does not want to be forced into a rushed camp.
Other possibilities: Conor McGregor and future plans
Oliveira also talked about Conor McGregor. McGregor has been away from the octagon for almost five years. Oliveira said he believes McGregor might really return this time because UFC president Dana White has been talking about a comeback. Oliveira mentioned International Fight Week as a possible time for McGregor to return.
For now, Oliveira said he will keep training and making weight. He is focused on one goal: getting back the lightweight title.
