Gable Steveson strongly defended Jon Jones after criticism from Daniel Cormier. The Olympic gold medalist said Jones is the right coach as he continues his early MMA career.
Steveson stands by his coach
Steveson, 25, said his relationship with Jon Jones is very important. He told MMA Fighting that Jones’ mentorship is “the best thing that we can have.”
Steveson called Jones “perfect” as a coach. He said Jones shows up on time, works hard and will work overtime if needed. “He’s everything you want in a coach,” Steveson said. He added that Jones has no ego in their training and is fully committed.
Daniel Cormier’s doubts
Former two-division UFC champion Daniel Cormier recently questioned whether Jones could be the focused coach Steveson needs. On The Ariel Helwani Show, Cormier said he believed Steveson could be a world champion but added that Jones as a coach might slow that path if Jones does not let other coaches coach.
Steveson responded to those doubts by pointing to Jones’ record and knowledge. He said learning from one of the sport’s greatest fighters is a rare chance. “He’s the best fighter of all-time leading a new guy to maybe be that person also,” Steveson said. “I’m a sponge. Just soaking in all the knowledge that I can.”
Steveson’s early MMA run and next event
The 2020 Olympic freestyle wrestling gold medalist is 3-0 in his MMA career. All three of his wins came by first-round knockout while working with Jones.
Steveson is also set to make his Real American Freestyle debut at the wrestling organization’s ninth event on May 30.
