Joe Rogan has rejected Jiri Prochazka’s explanation for his knockout loss to Carlos Ulberg at UFC 327 in Miami. Rogan says he understands Prochazka’s view, but he does not accept the mercy excuse.
What happened at UFC 327
At UFC 327 in Miami, Jiri Prochazka fought Carlos Ulberg for the vacant light heavyweight title. Ulberg landed a left hook that knocked out Prochazka and won the title. During the fight Ulberg tore his ACL. He continued and was able to land the finishing blow despite the injury.
After the fight, Prochazka first said he showed mercy. He later clarified that he thought the referee might stop the fight because Ulberg’s knee was damaged. That is why he backed off before the left hook landed.
Joe Rogan’s view
On his podcast Joe Rogan addressed both sides. He said listeners must look at the fight from two angles. “You’ve got to look at it two ways,” Rogan said. He explained that from Prochazka’s side the fight looked finished and he thought Ulberg was hurt. From Ulberg’s side, Rogan noted, the injured fighter could not move his leg and might have been stopped between rounds. Then Ulberg landed the left hook.
Rogan was clear about who he thinks is responsible. “Carlos got him, he f—ed up, it’s part of fighting, you have to be ruthless,” Rogan said. He added that he felt bad for Prochazka but also felt good for Ulberg because he found a way to win in a dramatic fashion. Rogan said Prochazka could have been smarter, and that the mercy excuse does not hold up.
Rogan made these comments on the Joe Rogan Experience podcast, episode #2487 with Action Bronson.
Aftermath and next steps
Carlos Ulberg is recovering from knee surgery in Las Vegas. Reports say he is not expected to return to competition until 2027. The long recovery means Ulberg will be out of action while he heals from the torn ACL and surgery.
Jiri Prochazka must now consider his next move after losing the vacant light heavyweight title. The loss and the surrounding discussion have created debate about tactics and sportsmanship in the cage. Many analysts, including Rogan, say that in championship fights fighters must stay ruthless until the end.
