On May 8, 2026, WWE Friday Night SmackDown served as the go-home show before Backlash. The night focused on Jacob Fatu preparing for his World Heavyweight Championship match with Roman Reigns. Several other matches and big segments set the stage for upcoming events.
Main story: Jacob Fatu faces the Bloodline
Jacob Fatu opened SmackDown with a fiery promo. He said he is not asking to fight Roman Reigns for the World Heavyweight Championship — he plans to take the title from him. Fatu spoke about being overlooked while Roman was always called the future. He said this match is for his family and vowed to become the World Heavyweight Champion.
The Usos came to the ring to talk to Fatu. Jimmy and Jey warned him that Roman will try to break him physically and emotionally in front of his family. Jey pointed out that he has never beaten Roman. Fatu answered that he will never accept Roman as Tribal Chief and warned the Usos not to interfere. He threatened to “burn the whole family down” if they stepped in.
Some analysts expect Roman to retain, but SmackDown left open the possibility of outside help or a surprise outcome at Backlash. The heated words and family tension set a tense tone for the title match.
Backstage and other big segments
Danhausen looked for a partner to face The Miz and Kit Wilson at Backlash. Miz and Wilson mocked him and suggested he was his own best partner. The moment played for laughs and set up the tag match story.
Paul Heyman appeared with a contract alongside Nick Aldis and Gunther. Cody Rhodes came out and demanded answers after Gunther attacked him last week. Heyman said the Undisputed Title fight will happen at Clash in Italy and that Rhodes will need to sign the contract to make it official. Gunther later attacked Rhodes at ringside, and the two faced off, keeping that feud alive.
Women’s Tag Team Champions Paige and Brie Bella challenged anyone to try and take their belts. Fatal Influence responded, saying they were ready. A six-woman tag later saw Fatal Influence defeat Rhea Ripley, Charlotte Flair, and Alexa Bliss.
SmackDown also held a short, strange funeral segment for the late Gingerbread Man, a recurring comic piece on the show.
