Jiri Prochazka said he did not fight at full strength after Carlos Ulberg suffered a knee injury early in their light-heavyweight fight at UFC 327 on Saturday night. Prochazka lost by knockout soon after the injury and now regrets his choice in the heat of the moment.
What happened in the fight
The bout at UFC 327 began with a strange turn. Carlos Ulberg hurt his knee in the opening round and struggled to stand and move. Instead of staying at range and attacking the damaged leg, Prochazka moved in to trade punches up close.
While Prochazka believed Ulberg was weakened, the move gave Ulberg a chance to counter. Ulberg landed a left hook that knocked out Prochazka and ended the fight. Ulberg was later reported to have suffered a serious knee injury during the same round.
Prochazka’s reaction
After the fight, Prochazka said he felt he had failed himself. “I didn’t give the performance that I wanted. I literally f*cked it up,” he told Televizní Noviny. He said he lost focus when he saw an injured opponent and no longer worked at 100 percent. He blamed that loss of focus for costing him the victory.
Prochazka also said he will learn from the mistake and become stronger. “After this performance, I will no longer be the same. I will no longer give those performances that I gave. I believe that after this experience, I will be stronger than ever before, and I will bring that title to the Czech Republic,” he said.
Title picture and what’s next
Prochazka won the UFC light-heavyweight title in 2022 but had to vacate it because of a shoulder injury. He then lost two title fights to Alex Pereira by TKO in 2023 and 2024. The loss at UFC 327 is his third defeat since he first won the belt.
Carlos Ulberg’s knee injury could keep him out of action for up to a year, according to reports. If Ulberg is forced to vacate the belt while he recovers, the title picture could change and open opportunities for other fighters, possibly including Prochazka. Prochazka said he has talked with UFC management and that they are open to different options, including interesting fights or another shot at the title.
Fight facts
Both fighters now face uncertainty. Ulberg has a big win but a serious injury. Prochazka has a clear plan to learn and push for the belt again.
