UFC president Dana White says the promotion will not rush Olympic gold medalist Gable Steveson into a top-level fight for his debut at UFC 329 on July 11 in Las Vegas.
Dana White: Matchmakers will pick the right fight
Speaking at the UFC Fight Night 273 post-fight press conference, White said the UFC will find an opponent for Steveson but will not immediately throw him into a title-level matchup.
“CM Punk fought here – we’ll find somebody,” White said. He added he did not know if the UFC would go after a top-15 opponent right away. “The UFC jitters are real. I don’t care how you’ve competed or where or what you’ve done. When you come here, it’s a different level.”
White praised the promotion’s matchmakers and said they will pick an opponent that fits Steveson’s current level and skills.
Steveson’s early MMA run
Gable Steveson is 25 years old and a former Olympic wrestling gold medalist. He began his pro MMA career in September of last year.
Since turning pro, Steveson has won three straight fights, all by first-round strikes. That fast start has raised excitement about his potential at heavyweight.
Comparisons and caution: Bo Nickal example
Fans have compared the buzz around Steveson to the early hype for Bo Nickal. Nickal also came from a strong wrestling background and drew big attention after a few MMA fights.
The UFC chose to bring Nickal along more slowly. That careful approach helped Nickal find and fix holes in his game. The report notes Nickal has gone 5-1 at middleweight so far.
Heavyweight picture and next steps
The heavyweight division is not as deep as some other weight classes. Because of that, a talented, athletic wrestler like Steveson could make an early impact if he keeps winning.
For now, the confirmed facts are: Steveson’s UFC debut is scheduled for July 11 at UFC 329 in Las Vegas. The UFC will announce his opponent when matchmakers decide who fits his current level.
| Fighter | Recent Result |
|---|---|
| Gable Steveson | Three straight wins, all first-round strikes since pro debut (Sept) |
