Ryan Spann stopped Marcus “Buchecha” with a powerful punch in the second round of the main-card opener at UFC Fight Night 274. Spann landed a left hook and a straight right that ended the fight at 2:10 of round two.
Round One
The fight opened with Buchecha throwing a calf kick while Spann used his jab to stay busy. Buchecha worked for takedowns early and showed his jiu-jitsu right away.
Buchecha got Spann to the mat at one point, and Spann briefly considered a guillotine choke before choosing not to hold it. Spann later went down with Buchecha again. Buchecha scrambled to his feet and secured another takedown, moving to half-guard and looking for control. Spann powered back up and escaped the position.
Spann landed an uppercut while stuffing a takedown and mixed striking with risky mat work. Buchecha landed a heavy low kick that rocked Spann a little and later secured another takedown, briefly hunting a leg lock. Spann escaped and finished the round on top, setting the stage for the next frame.
Round Two and the Finish
Spann opened the second with an inside leg kick. The referee warned Buchecha after he kept extending his fingers while grappling. Buchecha again drove for a takedown against the fence, and Spann once more threatened a guillotine as they went to the mat. They returned to standing quickly.
Buchecha swung big and missed. Spann countered with a clean punch. Then Spann stepped in with a solid left hook followed by a heavy straight right. The straight right sent Buchecha slumping sideways to the canvas. Spann did not follow up aggressively and the contest was called a knockout at 2:10 of round two.
Notes and Observations
The fight showed a contrast in styles. Buchecha repeatedly tried to use his world-class Brazilian jiu-jitsu and takedowns. Spann mixed striking with brief submission attempts and used his power effectively when he found range.
Buchecha’s takedown work got him good positions in the first round, but Spann managed to escape and keep the fight standing at key moments. In the second round Spann found the shots that mattered and finished the fight with one heavy combination.
