Apollo Crews is no longer with WWE following the roster cuts after WrestleMania 42. After more than a decade with the company, his departure closes a strange and uneven run that mixed bright moments with odd creative choices.
Called Up Too Soon
Crews arrived in WWE with a strong indie background and a good reputation from his time as Uhaa Nation. He joined NXT and impressed at TakeOver: Brooklyn. Many thought he would grow more in NXT, but WWE moved him to the main roster much faster than usual.
He was called up on the Raw after WrestleMania 32 in 2016. WWE had no clear plan. Crews spent months beating lower-card opponents without a steady storyline. He had a feud with Sheamus and a solid match at Money in the Bank 2016, but he never found a stable place on either Raw or SmackDown after the 2016 brand split.
Bizarre Gimmicks and Titus Worldwide
WWE tried many ideas for Crews, but most did not fit him. He was part of Titus Worldwide, a comedy team led by Titus O’Neil that included Dana Brooke and others. The group was mostly used for light entertainment and never gave Crews a strong solo direction.
In 2021 Crews turned heel and WWE gave him a new persona. He adopted a manufactured accent, traditional clothing, a spear, and a militant bodyguard. The character was controversial and included a match type called the Nigerian Drum Fight. The angle showed some momentum at first, but WWE cut back on his mic time and eventually dropped the idea.
WWE later sent Crews back to NXT in 2022, during the NXT 2.0 era. There he was booked with a psychic gimmick. The show aired dream-like vignettes in which Crews “saw” future events. The skits were unusual for WWE and did not lead to long-term success. Below is a clip related to that era.
Title Moments and Missed Potential
Despite inconsistent booking, Crews did reach the midcard title scene. He won the United States Championship in the WWE lockdown period, including a run against members of The Hurt Business. Later, in 2021, Crews targeted Big E and won the Intercontinental Championship on the WrestleMania main card. Both title runs were relatively short and had few standout moments, but they remain bright spots in his WWE record.
Overall, Crews’ career in WWE mixed flashes of real talent with periods of absence and odd creative choices. UFCcoverage looks back at a run that showed his ability but never reached a steady main-event level.
Looking Ahead
With his WWE run over, Crews can now choose his next step. He leaves with name recognition, some title history, and a clear résumé of varied work. Fans and promoters will watch to see where his career goes next.
