Carlos Ulberg has given an update on a swollen knee he suffered during his big win over Jiri Prochazka. He also admitted he misplaced the 205lb title during post-fight celebrations in Miami.
Knee injury update
Ulberg said the knee swelled early in the first round of his fight with Jiri Prochazka for the vacant light-heavyweight title. Despite the injury, he managed to score a knockout soon after.
He told UFCcoverage that he will stay in the U.S. to get scans and see doctors in Las Vegas. Ulberg plans to visit the UFC Performance Institute for physio and further care. If surgery is needed, he said he will have it.
“My knee is really swollen so I’ll stay in the U.S. for scans and then, if I need to go under the knife, I will,” Ulberg said. “I think I’ll fly to Las Vegas in the next few days and see the doctors there. Then I can do physio at the UFC Performance Institute and get looked after by the guys there. That’s the plan. Get the knee sorted in Las Vegas and hang around for a few weeks.”
How he handled the injury
Ulberg said he has been “hobbling around” since the fight and will take medical advice on the next steps. He compared the situation to a past kickboxing moment when he broke his hand during a King of the Ring event.
He recalled fighting three times in one night for that kickboxing event and later finding out he needed surgery. “It was only after getting back that I went and saw a doctor who said, ‘You need surgery.’ I already knew and said, ‘OK, let’s get it done.’ And I think that’s what we’re facing now,” he said.
Lost belt during celebrations
Ulberg admitted he lost the 205lb belt he had just won during celebrations in Miami. He described a long night that began with champagne and ended with shots and an afterparty at a nightclub.
“I’ve lost the belt, bro,” Ulberg said. “I don’t know exactly where it is. Initially after winning, the plan was to not have a drink. But you know how these things go, right? First, someone gives you a champagne to celebrate. Then one thing leads to another and you’re doing shots. So it’s ‘OK, I’ll have another, and another, and another…’ We’ve got a big group of boys over here in Miami and, when the fight was done, we all went out to the afterparty at a nightclub.”
He thinks the belt may be at a friend’s apartment. “I didn’t want to be carrying the belt around so I think it’s still there at the apartment somewhere. One of the boys probably has it in bed with him,” he said.
What comes next
Ulberg will get medical scans and treatment in Las Vegas. He expects to use the UFC Performance Institute for physio and follow-up care. There is a chance he will have surgery depending on scan results and doctor advice.
