Renato Moicano has publicly criticized the UFC for using artificial intelligence to create promotional content. He said the AI work felt lazy and disrespectful to fans.
Moicano speaks out
In a recent interview on The Ariel Helwani Show, lightweight contender Renato Moicano said he did not like the UFC using AI for content. He called the AI graphics “sloppy” and said they show a lack of care for fans.
“UFC is not going to be very happy for me to say that, but I didn’t like it,” Moicano said. “I think that’s disrespectful towards the fans, because I am a fan myself. If you can’t put Alex Pereira or Ilia Topuria on an airplane and put them in Washington in front of the White House, I don’t think that’s good. I think that’s sloppy. I don’t like to use AI in my stuff. I’m not saying AI doesn’t help, some stuff I use AI. But not for content. Because I think people can see that’s just sloppy. That’s brain rot.”
Fan reaction and Dana White
Fans noticed AI images in some recent UFC promos. One example was a UFC: White House video promo that drew many negative comments on the UFC’s YouTube channel. Some fans called the work “AI slop.”
UFC president Dana White has defended the use of AI. At a press conference, White said, “AI is coming, and if we’re using AI, who gives a sh*t? How about this: Shut the f*ck up and watch the fights.” His comment shows the promotion plans to continue using the technology despite the criticism.
UFC’s view: AI as a tool
Craig Borsari, the UFC’s Chief Content Creator, also spoke about AI and defended the choice to use it. He told UFCcoverage that AI gives production teams new tools for storytelling and can help them work more efficiently.
“The way we look at AI is not a substitute for content creation, but rather a way to amplify it,” Borsari said. He compared AI to other tools, like a green screen, and said the technology is evolving fast. Borsari said he encourages his team to push the envelope and try new things rather than play it safe.
Where things stand
For now, the UFC seems likely to keep using AI in promotion. Fighters like Moicano have pushed back and said the results can feel inauthentic. UFC leaders argue AI can help tell better stories and speed up production.
The debate is likely to continue as the promotion releases more content. Fans, fighters, and UFC staff all have strong views on whether AI helps or hurts the sport’s image.
